Parts Bulletin LT3100-G8

LT3100-G8 PROBLEM: Inching cables on some of the above listed truck models are experiencing repeat breakage. This relates to the angle of cable installation and the support brackets which cause a point of friction on the cable. The cable will fray and eventually fail due to repeat pull and release during normal use. A typical failure will appear as shown in Fig 1 below. Fig. 2 shows the result of poor routing on the cowl end of the cable. The installation angle at the transmission end is less severe and normally not a problem. This is not a directive to rework all identified trucks but an announcement of redesigned parts availability for future failures. This improvement has been applied by the factory since February 2008. LT3100-K9 The inching spool in the above listed models has been replaced in production. The overall length remains the same but the machined length of the large OD has been shortened. The result is reduced inching pedal force and strain through the cable with a fully depressed pedal. A side benefit is reduced operator fatigue during operation. This was done to further improve the inching system and reduce cable failures as mentioned in technical bulletin LT-3100-G8 released last year. If you continue to experience cable breakage, this spool should also be replaced when the new cable is installed. Installation is simple but clutch pressure while inching should be checked after replacement. To do this, install a pressure gauge into either the FWD or REV pressure tap. Set the inching linkage so the spool is pushed fully into the transmission control valve with a fully elevated inching pedal. While in gear, operate the inching pedal and adjust the brake pedal pick-up bolt to contact the service brake pedal lever. At this point clutch pressure should not exceed 10 PSI. If it does, reset the brake pick-up bolt to lower the pressure at brake pick-up. Transmission pressure drops as the inching pedal is depressed while brake pressure increases once the pick-up bolt contacts the brake pedal assembly. It is important the overlap of these pressures is not too great. You should be slipping the clutch with little or no transmission pressure but not driving through the brakes.
